Gites

A question asked by many tourists is, what are gites? This type of self catering accommodation is typically found in France or just across the border into Spain where the Pyrenees Mountains separates these two countries. This form of accommodation can vary enormously from what many would describe as a holiday apartment to small renovated chateaus. Most, however, associate this form of dwelling to exist in the grounds of an existing home and appear to take on the appearance of a small or medium size country cottage. For many the attraction is that no singular gite is alike, whilst all such dwellings allow you to sample real French culture.

Another factor as to why these holiday rentals are so popular is price. Quite simply, many concerns are run as a sideline for homeowners looking to make some extra income, therefore, commercial rates are not necessarily applied meaning good value accommodation is available. There are of course caveats including the possibility that only basic facilities maybe provided in some instances. Therefore, if you are looking for a bargain, don’t expect luxurious items such as washing machines, dishwashers, toasters and DVD players all of which are sometimes taken for granted. As with all types of self catering, it pays to research thoroughly and seek recommendations from friends, family or scour independent internet reviews.

Other types of French gites exist on what many in the UK would call family friendly campsites or holiday camps which are run on a more commercial footing albeit still very good value for money. Expect to find entertainment facilities such as communal swimming pools, shops, bars, showers and washing facilities. In some establishments, there maybe fishing lakes or bike hire allowing you to explore the local area.

The most popular areas in France attracting millions of visitors who prefer self catering holiday homes to hotels or bed and breakfasts include Normandy which is just a short hop across the English Channel. Apart from its history, there are medieval towns inland and idyllic picturesque coastal towns to explore including Deauville and Honfleur. Venture further afield and you will the charming regions of Brittany and the Loire Valley which is home to stunning rivers and the most beautiful iconic Chateaus in the world. Dordogne gites are a favourite for many holidaymakers looking for that peaceful rural escape. Lastly, the South of France including the regions of Acquitaine and the Cote D’Azur plays hosts to tourists wanting to sample the delightful French Riviera on a budget.
