Holidays in Brighton

Read our guide to Brighton weekend trips and holidays

Brighton is perhaps considered the most exciting seaside destination in the UK and is renowned for its variety of attractions. Located on the coast of Sussex, Brighton is famed for its long stretches of beach and the traditional seaside fairs and amusements. As much as it has turned into a cosmopolitan city, holidays in Brighton still offer an authentic British seaside experience and it is easily the most sought after location for East Sussex accommodation, for both couples on romantic escapes and family getaways.

Brighton Beach

Brighton’s history as a popular tourist destination goes right back to the 18th Century, when the rows of Georgian terraces started popping up all around the area. A few years later the famous Royal Pavilion was built as the holiday accommodation for King George in 1783, and remained in the royal family into it was sold to the city in the 1840’s. Today, the building’s captivating Indian-influenced design is in just as good condition as ever, while the equally impressive interior gives visitors a wonderful insight into the rich and opulent surroundings of the 18th Century hierarchy.

Along the promenade there are a whole host of activities for both young and old to enjoy. Easily the stand-out attraction is Brighton Pier, which is filled with arcade games and amusements, as well as some exhilarating rides such as the Super Booster and the Helter Skelter among some of the highlights.

After you have indulged in some traditional cod and chips or ice cream on the pier, you can make your way over to the Sea Life Centre which is said to be the oldest working Aquarium in the world where you can discover a vast range of underwater creatures. Considering Brighton’s relatively small size, it is quite amazing how much is on offer.

Just a short walk from the Sea Life Centre and the Pavilion lies the famous Lanes area of the city. With its winding narrow streets and alleyways, some so tight that it’s single-file only, this charming little corner of Brighton is great for a day’s window shopping and visits to the many charming shops and cafes. This part of the city is especially popular with visitors and there is also a diverse range of restaurants serving Italian, Chinese, Spanish and French Cuisine. You will also be able to find a proper fish-and-chip shop in easy reach. Any shopaholics and bargain hunters cannot come to Brighton without paying a visit to Kensington Gardens. Only a short walk from the Lanes, this narrow street, as well as the surrounding area - is filled with great bookstores, clothes shops and cafes. The flea market (Snoopers Paradise) is definitely worth exploring for some rare gems.

But all these daytime activities are only half of what this celebrated city has to provide. Brighton is seen as one of the most vibrant destinations for nightlife and countless numbers of visitors come in search of its famous party atmosphere. The range of pubs, bars and clubs is sure to suit anyone’s tastes and can be found right across the city. If you fancy a beer (or two) by the beach, there are a host of venues providing live entertainment and DJ’s. In the centre of the city, you will never be far from a drinking spot, with the Lanes and Kensington Gardens areas offering a nice variety – from the action-packed late bars to relaxing pubs serving an array of different beers.

Although Brighton is a hive of activity all year round, the excitement reaches a climax for the festivals that are held here in the summer. Probably the most well-known is the Brighton Pride, which celebrates the city’s famous gay culture. Normally held around July/August each year, this festival is considered the biggest of its kind in the UK and claims to entertain an average of 100,000 people over its week-long duration. The Brighton festival is another important entry on the city’s calendar and is the second biggest performing arts festival in the UK – only just beaten by Edinburgh.

With all the activities and action on offer in Brighton, you will definitely be in need of a relaxing retreat to call home. Fortunately, the range of Brighton holiday accommodation can boast plenty of variety and is sure to meet anyone’s requirements. As it is such a popular location for weekend breaks, there is an abundance of bed and breakfasts offering space and comfort, and for self catering there are some great Brighton holiday rentals in  stunning locations that cannot be overlooked.

Many of the apartments in Brighton will leave you right in the heart of the action and will also allow you to take your holiday at your own pace. What are you waiting for?
