Warning of hidden extras in package holiday deals

With travel operators slashing prices in a bid to stimulate European package holidays this summer, a number of consumer groups have issued warnings for customers to be aware of hidden costs and charges. While the traditional strength of the pound has made Europe relatively cheap, following the launch of the Euro in 2002, its present weakness means actual costs have increased by more than 30% in the last two years. With travel agents desperate to sell places High Street prices are being reduced, and operators are looking to recoup their costs through 'hidden extras'.

Even where travellers are picking up genuine bargains, there's a danger that while flights and accommodation may seem cheap enough, other expenses, such as food and drink - along with admission fees and rental charges – could shock even the staunchest Europhiles, by adding hundreds of pounds to the cost of a two week family break. Meanwhile, the financial incentives of holidaying at home this year have never looked more attractive, and many accommodation providers are already reporting record bookings, some by as much as 50%, with value seeking foreign visitors now seeing Britain as a good-value destination.
