Essential tips for renting holiday accommodation
Deciding on which type of holiday rental is right for you is of course relative to what type of holiday you are looking for and who is in your party. You might benefit from lower prices when renting holiday accommodation out of season so be sure to check the rates and be flexible with you dates. Not only will you benefit from less crowded beaches and tourist attractions, but the savings might allow you to stay for a couple of extra days.
Ensure you take out appropriate travel insurance and be sure to check the terms and conditions to ensure activities like skiing or snowboarding are included (where appropriate).
Be sure to check all the booking conditions before travelling, and clarify any concerns with the owner or landlord ahead of arrival. Also, ensure you ask the property owner to send you an email confirming the booking and noting any deposit or monies paid.
Are there any extra charges? Local taxes, a fee for the heated swimming pool or perhaps an air conditioning supplement? Ensure you check the booking conditions thoroughly and if it any doubt do not hesitate to contact the individual property owner directly.
Don’t forget to read the cancellation policy should you not be able to travel, and ensure you notify the property owner so that they are not waiting for you.
Booking accommodation direct with the owners does not offer any financial protection from the official bodies including ABTA, however we do encourage all holidaymakers to purchase Supplier Failure Cover. This financial protection costs around £4 per person per booking and will financially protect your travel arrangements including your flights and your holiday rental.
In addition, consider using your credit card to pay for your travel arrangements (such as flights, ferries and car hire) and the deposit payment for your holiday rental booking as your credit card provider offers a degree of financial protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, providing of course the payment is over £100, but less than £30,000.) It is also worth noting that a return budget airline ticket for £140 is likely in fact to constitute two transactions for both the outbound and inbound flight, so it is worth checking with your credit card provider whether your booking is covered.A number of property owners will allow you to pay the balance for your holiday accommodation booking when you arrive but always ensure you check the booking conditions and payment terms.
Further information regarding the Consumer Credit Act can be found on the Financial Ombudsman website, however if you have any further questions do not hesitate to get in touch.
