Walking on Bankside

While much of London’s Embankment all the way up to the houses of parliament is a bit disappointing (what will all of the hotdog and waffle vendors, museums of questionable quality and the usual tourist tat), the area does have at least one redeeming feature, the walk.

Get off the tube at West Minster, photograph the Tower of St. Steven and then cross over West Minster bridge until you find yourself at the London Eye (the giant Ferris wheel). Keep walking all the way to the Tate Modern (around a 25 minute walk), stopping for regular photo opportunities at the National Theatre and the OXO tower. From here, either explore the galleries numerous floors, shops and cafes or take a wonder over the pedestrian-only London Millenium Footbridge, which takes you back across the river.

Art and architecture fix at Tate Modern

Art and architecture fix at Tate Modern

Split over 7 floors and offering a range of shops, cafes and exhibition space (including the grand Turbine Hall – which has to be seen), Tate Modern is an essential stop for a slice of culture on a budget, particularly with their free daily tours and free admission.

It can get busy with school groups within the week, so it's best to visit this amazing space over a weekend.
