Brighton Marina

Located a short drive or bus ride east from the city centre, Brighton’s Marina is a superb haven away from the crowds, perfect for a short day trip.

You can enjoy people watching at one of the many waterside cafes and restaurants - which include a number of chains including Strada, Café Rouge and Pizza Express - , shopping at the city’s outlet shopping centre or perhaps go bowling at the large Bowlplex centre.

One of my personal highlights however is walking through the quayside and admiring the huge range of yachts and powerboats. There is nothing quite like seeing how the other half live. Water tours and deep sea fishing trips are also available from the marina. You can even walk up each ‘arm’ of the Marina, which offers wonderful views back to the Marina village, or, if you’re feeling energetic, following the undercliff walk all the way to Saltdean, a distance of 4.5km.

Just browsing at the West Pier market

Just browsing at the West Pier market

The crumbling structure of the West Pier marks the location of a small market which takes place every weekend and features a number of stalls selling everything from second hand books, paintings, African clothing, hats and printed t-shirts.

Combine this market with a walk along the seafront, stopping at Al Fresco for a drink while you watch the world go by.

Hampstead Heath

After a few days in the centre of London it may well be time for some fresh air. Being one of the best cities for parkland in the world, there is a fine selection of charming green spaces that can offer some respite, but a visit to Hampstead Heath will be one for a true escape.

The thick forests and overgrown meadows of ‘the Heath’ – as it is more commonly referred by the locals – are not something you would normally associate with a trip to the capital, and when you find yourself in the middle of this 790-acre wilderness, all the high-paced congestion of the city streets will seem a million miles away.

As well as a wealth of lakes, ponds and charming architecture (Kenwood house being the big attraction in that department) no visit would be complete without a walk to the top of Parliament Hill. A steep climb it may be for some, once you approach the gap in the trees you will be met by probably the most enchanting view of the city. It is at this point that many people fall in love with London.

Walking on Bankside

While much of London’s Embankment all the way up to the houses of parliament is a bit disappointing (what will all of the hotdog and waffle vendors, museums of questionable quality and the usual tourist tat), the area does have at least one redeeming feature, the walk.

Get off the tube at West Minster, photograph the Tower of St. Steven and then cross over West Minster bridge until you find yourself at the London Eye (the giant Ferris wheel). Keep walking all the way to the Tate Modern (around a 25 minute walk), stopping for regular photo opportunities at the National Theatre and the OXO tower. From here, either explore the galleries numerous floors, shops and cafes or take a wonder over the pedestrian-only London Millenium Footbridge, which takes you back across the river.
