Travel Tips - Lewes, England
Lewes, county town of East Sussex, is a great surprise package just waiting to be explored. Emerging from the shadow of neighbouring Brighton, Lewes is now showing just why it is taking its place in the top ten towns to visit in the South of England. It has its own unique vibrancy and passion for life. Its rich historic heritage goes back to 1264 when at the Battle of Lewes the victorious Simon Demonfort was established as uncrowned king of England. Lewes Castle which dates back to 1066 is an imposing piece of historic architecture and is once again open to the public.
Lewes is a town that blends the old with the new superbly, and with its huge choice of hotels, pubs, bars and restaurants it literally has something for everyone.
November 5th is nationally known as bonfire night in commemoration of the foiling of the gunpowder plot to blow up the houses of parliament. But in Lewes it takes on a special significance with ritual bonfires, processions, and fireworks. The people wear fancy dress, and amid chants like "Burn the Pope" as they set effigies afire on top of the bonfires, it is almost like a modern pagan festival. It is the place to experience bonfire night. If you havenít done it yet add it to your list of must see sights in Sussex.

Occupying the courtyard of a sprawling antique furniture shop, which sees an old English red telephone box next to beautiful terracotta pots and period garden ornaments, the Buttercup café is absolutely delightful and its easy to see why it gets so busy, particular on lovely sunny days.
All of the food and cakes are homemade and fresh everyday, including wonderful cinnamon and rhubarb muffins, which are absolutely perfect after you’ve trekked around Lewes. You can also expect local produce including soups, meatballs and wholesome pies.
You have to discover this place for yourself… really you do. Head to the end of the old high street, turn left and look out for Pastorale Antiques. Buttercup is in the courtyard.
