As one of the world's most historic cities, the buildings of the city of Rome display some of the best historic architecture anywhere in the world. There are well preserved ruins all over the wonderful city that seem to crop up in the most ordinary or sometimes unexpected of places.
The greatest architectural and technological achievement of the Roman Empire is the Coliseum. Originally named the Flavian Amphitheater and completed in 80AD capable of seating 50,000 spectators, this monumental building still stands proud and elegant today amidst careful reconstruction works, a tribute to sensational Roman architecture and engineering.
The Pantheon, constructed in 32AD is another stunning masterpiece of Roman architecture and technology, and the Spanish Steps still attract tourists in their millions to gaze in wonder and to click their cameras at this world renowned piece of Roman Baroque architecture, connecting the Barcaccia Fountain at the foot of the famous fan shaped staircase to the Trinita Church at the very top. The Coliseum seated 60,000 spectators and is made up of 80 arches on the ground floor through which ancient Romans could gain access to the grounds. However, nowadays, only a single entrance is used, contributing to massive lines, where tourists can spend hours waiting to purchase admission tickets. To skip the wait, visit the neighboring Palatine Hill first. The line to access the Palatine Hill is significantly shorter, and once there, you can buy a dual Coliseum/Palatine Hill ticket. The halls of the Coliseum also play host to temporary art exhibits that shouldn’t be ignored.
