Travel Tips - People-watching

No need for maps, guides or tour operators, examining the way other people walk, dress, talk and act has been going on as long as human beings have been around, and is a favourite holiday pastime all over the world. Psychologists would have us believe it's part of our 'flight or fight function', based on whether we see others as a possible threat or potential mate. Nowadays, few of us take things that seriously, but what could be more pleasing, especially when visiting a new place, than finding yourself a good vantage spot, making yourself comfortable with a drink and spending a relaxing hour or two simply watching the way other people behave.

From the elegant street cafes and bars of London's Covent Garden to the Mediterranean promenades of the French Riviera, check out each of the People Watching Travel Tips and explore a fascinating new side of your next holiday destination.

Brighton Marina

Located a short drive or bus ride east from the city centre, Brighton’s Marina is a superb haven away from the crowds, perfect for a short day trip.

You can enjoy people watching at one of the many waterside cafes and restaurants - which include a number of chains including Strada, Café Rouge and Pizza Express - , shopping at the city’s outlet shopping centre or perhaps go bowling at the large Bowlplex centre.

One of my personal highlights however is walking through the quayside and admiring the huge range of yachts and powerboats. There is nothing quite like seeing how the other half live. Water tours and deep sea fishing trips are also available from the marina. You can even walk up each ‘arm’ of the Marina, which offers wonderful views back to the Marina village, or, if you’re feeling energetic, following the undercliff walk all the way to Saltdean, a distance of 4.5km.

Seeing how the other half live in Nice Port

It is no surprise that the French Riviera is often referred to as the Playground of the rich and a short stroll along the promenade in the Port of Nice will leave you mesmerised as to the size and scale of some of the motor boats and super yachts moored there.

Well worth a quick visit.

Outstanding Macaroons at Ladurée Paris

Outstanding Macaroons at Ladurée Paris

Forget Eiffel tower key rings, t-shirts and other obvious tourist tat and instead bring home some gorgeous macaroons from one of the branches of Ladurée. The packaging is beautiful, that is, if they last until you get home!

For an extra indulgence head over to their grand tearoom on the Champs Elysées.You won’t be disappointed.
