If you are looking to get away from the hectic high-street crowds of London's Oxford and Regent street in the run up to Christmas, why not consider the Sussex seaside city of Brighton? Here you can discover a variety of traditional brands as well as a whole host of independent boutiques and shops where you are sure to find that perfect Christmas gift.

The famous North Laine area which includes Gardener Street, Kensington Gardens and the often forgotten about Sydney Streets, boasts a variety of shops to suit all tastes, offering everything from vintage clothing and antiques to charming homeware and stylish bikes. You'll also find plenty of opportunities to take some time out in one of the many cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs of which there are plenty, scattered all through the area.

But, while Brighton can make a welcomed retreat for a Christmas shopping spree, you might also like to time your visit to coincide with the famous ‘Burning the Clocks’ festival, which takes place on the 21st of December from 6.30pm, and celebrates winter solstice (the shortest day of the year). For this annual event, with has been held every year since 1993, vast crowds take to the streets, with burning lanterns, huge firework displays, entertainment and flaming art installations all providing exhilarating excitement for the whole family. The parade begins on North Street in the city centre, and the whole celebration ends with the burning of the great pyre on the beach.

Brighton is of course a popular year round holiday destination and as a result you can find plenty of quality Brighton holiday accommodation, ranging from charming bed and breakfasts to holiday rentals, which promise all of the modern comforts of home. When staying in Brighton at Christmas, you'll never be far away from the festive excitement, not to mention some absolutely superb shopping.
