Pompeii Virtual Tour on Street View

Google seems determined to have every inch of the globe covered with easy access to everyone. The latest addition to their revolutionary Street View feature on Google Maps is the stunning ruins of Pompeii in Southern Italy. Thanks to Google, you will now be able to walk around this famous historical site without leaving the comfort of desk.

Pompeii Ruins on Street View

When the nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the town of Pompeii was covered in layers of ash and molten rock, leaving all of the buildings, and many residents, encased beneath the surface. It has since become one of the world's most popular historical tourist attractions, not least with travellers on vacation in Italy.

But as much as you have got to hand it to Google for such an amazing edition to Street View, their '3-D' experience seems very two dimensional in comparison to the real thing. There is of course nothing like witnessing this truly outstanding sight in person, and if you thought a trip to Pompeii might be out of your budget, you could be surprised at the good deals you can get for Southern Italy vacation rentals, especially if you book off-peak. Pompeii is only a short distance from the city of Naples, which is a perfect base for exploring the countryside and cities along the west coast of the country. The city also offers an excellent range of self catering apartments, which are simply ideal for low cost family holidays in Italy.

There is no doubt that the addition of Pompeii to Google Street View will attract many more visitors to these ancient Roman ruins. Let's hope they continue to add even more captivating attractions.

Well of course viewing it through Google Maps street view isn't anything like actually being there, that is missing the point completely. There are a large number of people in the world who will NEVER go to Italia let alone Pompeii physically. Google Maps street view gives these people the opportunity to take a look around. It can be the lifting point for a child\'s imagination which sets them on a life filled with travel, exploration and experiences.

But mostly, Google Maps street view, like the rest of Google Maps is mostly intended for persons who are already actually physically there and are trying to find their way around. Street view is a feature which helps you navigate more effectively by allowing you to see landmarks near you, or that you should pass while moving to your intended destination, as opposed to just offering a top down map with a little icon that says "You are here" which can be bothersome to follow at times. THAT is the primary intended purpose of Google Maps Street View.

What you're forgetting is that Google Maps helps to inspire users. There is no need to focus exclusively on what is primary use it, lets just enjoy it.

When I went to Pompeii for the first time, it was a hot summer and the first thing that blew my mind was the size of the site. Pompeii is huge, I mean city huge. It is part of a larger Vesuvius National Park. It is famous for natural beauty. I like this place. It is crowded city.
